[New Taipei City News] — The winning projects of the 2025 New Taipei City Documentary Awards were announced today (April 19). Following a three-day public pitch event, 28 shortlisted teams presented their projects and participated in a Q&A session with the jury to compete for 12 Documentary Award selections and 1 Chi Po-lin Environmental Documentary Award. Each selected project will receive a NT$350,000 production grant, with full copyright retained by the creators. The awards ceremony is scheduled for late October, where the top three winners and the Jury Special Award will also be revealed.
New Taipei City Deputy Mayor Chu Tizhi attended the announcement event and emphasized that the "New Taipei City Documentary Awards" is a significant honor in Taiwan's documentary film industry. Over the years, the city government has supported and nurtured documentary filmmakers, helping 134 directors complete 146 short documentaries to date. Many of these selected works have been developed into feature-length documentaries and recognized in domestic and international film festivals. Deputy Mayor Chu expressed gratitude to all the participating teams, jury members, and film professionals who have contributed to the growth of the awards, now celebrating its 15th year. The city will continue integrating diverse resources to organize events and film festivals showcasing the achievements of New Taipei’s documentary creators, sharing the city's stories and the power of visual storytelling.
Information Department Director Li Lizhen stated that during the October awards ceremony, the top three projects and a new category — the Jury Special Award — will be announced. These winners will receive additional cash prizes of NT$100,000, NT$80,000, NT$60,000, and NT$30,000 respectively. To mark the 15th anniversary of the awards, a series of events is being planned, including the launch of the "New Taipei Skyline Film Festival" this May. Citizens are invited to join in and continue documenting the city through film as New Taipei embarks on its next exciting chapter.
The city’s Information Department hosted the public pitch sessions from April 17 to 19, inviting esteemed industry professionals — including Golden Horse-nominated directors and award-winning filmmakers — to serve as jurors. The panel included directors Huang Hsin-Hsiu, Hsu Che-Chia, Tseng Wen-Chen, Huang Chia-Chun, Hsiao Chu-Chen, editing advisor Lei Chen-Ching, and producer Han Hsin-Hsin. They provided constructive critiques and creative guidance to help teams refine their narratives and expand their creative visions.
The selected projects are expected to be completed by September and will premiere in late October. During production, a mentorship workshop will be held where professionals will offer technical and creative advice. The city also encourages the selected teams to continue developing their projects, participate in domestic and international forums and festivals, and seek further funding and exposure. The goal is to help New Taipei’s documentaries reach wider audiences around the world.
