The New Taipei City Documentary Film Award aspires to promote documentary film and encourage directors. By providing local and foreign documentary filmmakers with a stage to demonstrate their capabilities, the award has grown into a grand event with a total of 86 directors completing 96 select films over the past 10 years. Noted for portraying diverse themes that extend across Taiwan and to overseas settings, the films are remarkably well received. This year (2020) the competition features 105 films by a diverse group of filmmakers, from seasoned older directors to newcomers. Each of the select films that is screened will receive a US$10,000 reward and qualify for production assistance from a renowned local filmmaker, with full copyright privileges remaining with the director. The select films will premiere during the 2020 New Taipei City Documentary Film Month and have an opportunity to be screened overseas.
This year we chose 12 select films: Lin Shih-chun’s “Ms. Lin - The Retouching Lady,” Su Mei-yu’s “My Way,” Lin Tse-yu‘s “The Old Men’s Party,” Sung Yan-fei’s “Sung’s Family,” Hsin Pei-yi’s “Lives with Illness,” Liao Jian-hua’s “The Wild Boys,” Chang Tzu-hsiang’s “Versus,” Chen Wei-chieh’s “Ning,” Chen Kuan-chun’s “Today, You Are You,” Zheng Wei-xuan’s “The Time We Spent Together,” Chan Lok-ray’s “Hide: Price of Freedom,” and Sin Ho-yeung’s “My Silly Flirty Boys.”
Director Huang Ming-chuan, producer Gary Shih, director Huang Chia-chun, teacher Liao Ching-sung, director Ho Chao-ti, and film festival director Li Ya-mei will speak in a carefully planned workshop that covers a wide range of themes, including documentary film proposals, production, editing, fundraising, and distribution. They will explore the challenges that documentary filmmakers face while sharing their personal experiences.
“We are touched that you have been with us for the past 10 years.” After many documentary filmmakers joined us during the past decade, we look forward to continuing these partnerships as New Taipei City promotes documentary films during the next 10 years.
