After reviewing all the 2022 New Taipei City Documentary Film Awards in the public proposal meeting at Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute, today (4/22) New Taipei City Mayor, Hou Yu-ih along with jury group representative announced 12 nominated films of its first round selection.
Mayor Hou said, as tradition of New Taipei City Documentary Film Awards goes, all nominated film directors own the copyright of their works, and will be receiving 10,000 USD production fund and filming assistance. This year, one addition prize, The Chi Po-lin Documentary Award is added in the award list. All 13 nominated works are anticipated to be all set at the end of September and to contend this years’ top 3 titles in October.
Nominated 13 films includes: “The True Spirit” - Huang Kai-Ching, “25Kg” - Chiu Chi-Liang, “The Sleepless Night in Longsheng Village” - Huang Shu-Mei, “Elephant on the island” - Chen Wei-Tzu, “Politics, Traders, Farmers” - Huang Chi-Hsien, “Stay” - HUANG,SHENG-CHUN & Hsueh, Jo-Yi, “Portrait of a child” - Lu Xiao-Wen, “Stranded” - Pan Si-Han, “Obasan” - Chen Wan-Cheng, “Nut Brother” - Xia Peng-Cheng & Che Yi-Tsen, “Identify” - Cho, Tzu-Lan & HUANG,HUI-CHEN and “Who's going to be the first to say goodbye” - Hsu Ching-Lun. And The Chi Po-lin Documentary Award goes to “Ocean Homicide” - Chang Hung-Chieh.
“Every step of our lives is filled with memories, just as documentary films that every frame present one story.” New Taipei City Documentary Award has been held for 12 years, and we have seen abundant heart touching moment through the whole works. This year New Taipei City Government first cooperate with The Chi Po-lin Fundation to establish The Chi Po-lin Documentary Award to encourage more creators’ engagement with a bonus sponsorship, the Department of Information, New Taipei City Government will also look for funds to continue to provide funding, stage, technical and administrative assistance, so that creators can obtain the best resources and bring their documentary works more social impactful, said Mayor Hou Yu-ih.
Mayor Hou Yu-ih also shared that New Taipei City Government has strongly supported documentary film production since the municipality upgrades, and he has never been absent from documentary-related activities in the past 12 years. New Taipei City Documentary Film Awards has not only cultivated 98 award-winning directors and 107 nominated documentary works but successfully gained popularity and impact in the industry. This year, a total of 84 shooting proposals were collected. After a preliminary review by a professional jury, 27 films were selected to be nominated, and on April 21 and 22, an open proposal meeting was held at the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute, and 13 outstanding works were as award nomination.
Xie Lilan, deputy director of the Department of Information New Taipei City Government, said that the nominated works will be filmed and edited for half a year, and expected to be completed in late September. All the nominated films will contest for the top 3 and will be announced at the awards ceremony in October and will be premiered at the "New Taipei City International Documentary Month".
Besides, Department of Information New Taipei City Government also encourage that works which have won New Taipei City Documentary Award to develop in feature films and to be screened in theaters. Directors of the award-nominated films over the years are welcome to apply for marketing assistance.
Department of Information New Taipei City Government stated that this year's judges are all well-known names in the industry. Directors such as Huang Ming-chuan, He Zhao-ti, Hong Chun-xiu, Li Nian-xiu, Mai Jue-ming, as well as Wu Huijun, a well-known film marketing director, and Wang Junqi, the executive director of the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute to participated in the public proposal meeting.
Each judge will give the finalists different perspectives of the story line in the proposal, and also sharply analyze the work, looking forward to each proposal being more exciting.
