Every year during the Ching Ming Festival, our family worships a boulder without a tombstone. Because our ancestors, who were fishermen for generations, lived as sea nomads and were buried in random locations after their deaths. Over time, the burial sites and even the names of our ancestors were lost, leading our elders to choose this boulder by the sea as a symbol of our forefathers.
Half a century ago, my grandfather brought my father to settle in Cheung Chau, and since then, our family has not returned to the sea. Although we came ashore, our hearts continued to drift. More than a decade ago, I moved to Taiwan, and like my father, I often gaze at the distant islands, uncertain which one is our true home.
