[New Taipei City News] The annual selected works of the 2024 New Taipei City Documentary Award were announced today (17th). The three-day open proposal event followed the format of international documentary proposals, allowing participating teams and audiences to experience the tense atmosphere of proposal sessions, cultivate presentation and Q&A skills. 29 teams competed for 12 New Taipei City Documentary Award selected films and 1 Chi Po-lin Documentary Award. The selected films will receive NT$350,000 in production funding to continue encouraging documentary filmmaking in Taiwan.
Over the past 14 years, the New Taipei City Documentary Award has been deeply involved in the documentary field, becoming an important award in Taiwan's documentary industry. Through open submissions, it provides documentary filmmakers with production funds and advice from professional instructors. So far, it has assisted 123 directors and produced 133 selected films. All works' copyrights return to the directors, and active screening promotion activities are carried out. This year, campus screenings, outdoor screenings, overseas exhibitions, and the New Taipei Sky Film Festival are also planned, hoping to let more people see the documentaries.
A total of 106 shooting proposals were received this year, and a public proposal meeting was held at the New Taipei City Government on April 15th, 16th, and 17th for three consecutive days. Many industry elites, previous award winners and frequent participants, such as directors Tseng Wen-Chen, Hsin-Yao Huang, Jing-jie Lin, Che-Chia Hsu, international producer Stefano Centini, editing instructor Chen-Ching Lei, and Wang Shih, co-founder of Activator Co., Ltd.., formed the public proposal review team. With their different professional focuses and rich experiences, they provided in-depth analysis and comprehensive advice. Director Jing-jie Lin, representing the review team, said that the proposal conference provided a platform for communication for reviewers and all participants. The criticisms raised by the reviewers during the meeting are not meant to be negative or difficult but rather expressions of love from the review team to the creators, hoping that everyone can rethink the original intention of their creation. Lin-Yi Lin, Deputy Executive Director of the Chi Po-lin Foundation, said that this year's Chi Po-lin Documentary Award attracted high school students, university students, graduate students, and the public. The topics of concern ranged from animals, ecology to air pollution, hoping to raise more awareness of environmental issues through the encouragement of awards.
Deputy Mayor of New Taipei City, Ho-Jan Liu, stated at the selected film release event that every year he looks forward to it. Through the perspectives of participants and documentary filmmakers, we can record and explore the real stories of Taiwan and even the world, the life experiences of different people, which allows us to pay attention to and reflect on these issues. Regardless of whether they receive awards, each nominated work is outstanding and wonderful enough. We hope that every work can continue to develop into films, allowing more people to see these diverse records, the life trajectories of different people, and witness the vigorous development of Taiwanese documentaries on more and broader stages.
The director of the Department of Information of New Taipei City Government Ai-Ching Chang expressed gratitude to all the registered and participating teams, the review team, and the film and television workers for their support, which led to the creation of many selected films for the New Taipei City Documentary Award. The "2024 New Taipei City Documentary Award" is scheduled to be held in late October to announce the top three winners of the New Taipei City Documentary Award this year. The winners will each receive NT$100,000, NT$80,000, and NT$60,000 respectively. New Taipei City is proud to be able to assist more documentary filmmakers, hoping that New Taipei City will provide more support to documentary filmmakers. All selected films will also premiere at the "New Taipei City International Documentary Month." In addition, the Department of Information of New Taipei City Government 's exclusive collaboration with EVA Air, the "New Taipei Theater," will set sail again in May, launching a new season of screening lists, and planning to simultaneously launch on the LINE TV platform, allowing the New Taipei City Documentary Award to soar together.
