[New Taipei News] The New Taipei City Documentary Film Awards ceremony was held today (25th), announcing the top three winners who each received a trophy and prize money of NT$100,000, NT$80,000, and NT$60,000, respectively. Thirteen other outstanding films were awarded certificates. New Taipei City Mayor Hou Yu-Ih, Director of the Information Department Lee Li-chen, as well as key partners from the Chi Po-lin Foundation, CEO Wan Guan-Li, Director Chi Ting-Huan, judge panel representative and producer Han Xin-Xin, senior directors Tseng Wen-Chen, Hsu Che-Chia, Maso Chen, Chen Hao-Mei, and renowned film marketer Wang Shi, attended the event to celebrate and warmly congratulate the winners.
Mayor Hou Yu-Ih expressed his gratitude to all the documentary creators, acknowledging their dedication and passion. He highlighted that every year, New Taipei City deeply appreciates the commitment of the award-winning teams and documentary filmmakers. The city will continue to support and accompany documentary creators in exploring the beauty of life, striving to continue the friendly environment for documentaries, offering limitless creative space. Hou also expressed hope that more talented individuals would be inspired to document society’s diverse voices and create impactful, inspiring films.
During his speech, Chi Ting-Huan, Director of the Chi Po-lin Foundation, expressed his pleasure in partnering with the New Taipei City Documentary Film Awards again this year. He emphasized the value of documentaries in showing the beauty and sorrow of Taiwan’s landscapes and conveyed hopes that the Chi Po-lin Environmental Documentary Award would offer more support to those dedicated to environmental conservation, raising awareness on environmental issues. Chi encouraged everyone to contribute to continuing his father, Chi Po-lin’s, legacy by promoting environmental protection and education.
Producer Han Xin-Xin, representing the judging panel, shared that unique stories and compelling characters create the essence of an excellent documentary. This year’s 13 outstanding films continued to uphold the spirit of the New Taipei City Documentary Film Awards, presenting diverse stories and perspectives. Many of these films touch on deep family and friendship bonds, showcasing the genuine allure of documentaries. She mentioned that a good documentary resonates with viewers long after they leave the cinema.
The final judges agreed that this year’s entries revealed a rich diversity in perspectives and filming techniques, capturing the nuances of contemporary society. Through the creators' journeys and detailed storytelling, the documentaries displayed remarkable talent and finesse. The judges look forward to seeing these works reach a broader audience and to the continued evolution of these meaningful stories.
Additionally, the Department of Information announced that the [2024 New Taipei City International Documentary Month] will kick off on November 3rd at the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute with a special premiere of "XiXi," a collaborative documentary by a Taiwanese director and international partners. The film has been nominated for Best Documentary at this year’s Golden Horse Awards and has also been featured in the “Wide Angle” documentary section of the 29th Busan International Film Festival. The director received the "Best Emerging International Filmmaker Award" at Canada’s Hot Docs International Documentary Festival for this work. Everyone is invited to experience the allure of this award-winning piece. Following the opening ceremony, a month-long screening event will be held across several venues, including the New Taipei City Library Main Branch, Fuzhong 15 Documentary Cinema, Vieshow Cinemas Global Mall, and Banqiao Showtime Cinema. The 13 outstanding documentaries of the year will also premiere as part of the [2024 New Taipei City International Documentary Month]. All are welcome to attend and enjoy the screenings.
