13 Projects Stand Out in 2026 New Taipei City Documentary Award; Each Receives NT$350,000 Grant

NEW TAIPEI CITY — The winning projects of the 2026 New Taipei City Documentary Award were officially announced today, April 25. Modeled on international pitching practices, the New Taipei City Government held a three-day public pitching session at the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute (TFAI). A total of 26 shortlisted teams competed for 12 spots in the "New Taipei City Documentary Award" and one spot for the "Chi Po-lin Environmental Documentary Award". Each selected team will receive a production grant of NT$350,000 to support filmmakers in developing their projects and bringing their creative visions to fruition, while fostering emerging talent in documentary filmmaking from New Taipei City.

Vice Mayor Jhu, Ti-Jhih, stated that the New Taipei City Documentary Award has entered its 16th year and has become a key platform for documentary filmmaking in Taiwan. To date, the program has supported more than 100 directors in completing 159 documentary shorts. Several of these works have been developed into feature-length films, screened in cinemas, and recognized by domestic and international awards—such as After the Snowmelt and Island of the Winds.

Vice Mayor Jhu also expressed appreciation to all participating teams and reaffirmed the City Government’s commitment to continued investment in documentary filmmaking. He noted that the initiative plays an important role in promoting Taiwan’s documentary industry, enabling original Taiwanese stories to be documented and brought to the international stage, while showcasing the strength of Taiwan’s documentary storytelling to global audiences.

Director Lee, Li-Chen, of the Information Department, stated that the New Taipei City Documentary Award continues its collaboration with the Chi Po-lin Foundation this year to present the "Chi Po-lin Environmental Documentary Award", encouraging filmmakers to address environmental issues. She added that the 13 selected teams will enter a six-month production phase. The City Government will organize producer-led workshops, inviting experienced documentary filmmakers and industry professionals to provide guidance and mentorship throughout the production process. Participants will also have the opportunity to attend the Chinese Documentary Forum (CCDF) organized by CNEX, helping their projects gain greater exposure on the international stage.

Lin, Ying-Yi, Deputy Executive Director of the Chi Po-lin Foundation, stated that visual storytelling has the power to resonate deeply with audiences. She expressed hope that the winning teams would honor Director Chi Po-lin’s legacy of “letting images be the starting point for change.” By leveraging their unique perspectives, these filmmakers can help audiences reconnect with the land and turn environmental awareness into concrete action.

The Information Department added that the jury for this year’s public pitching session included veteran filmmakers and producers Zhou, Wen-Qin; Lin, Jing-Jie; Huang, Chia-Chun; Chiang, Wei-Liang; Ho, Chao-Ti; Lu, Ying-Liang; and Yu, Li-Ping. Through in-person Q&A sessions with the jury, participants engaged in constructive exchanges that helped refine their storytelling perspectives, demonstrating the depth and vitality of Taiwan’s documentary filmmaking. The New Taipei City Documentary Award will continue to support documentary filmmakers in capturing authentic stories from this land.
