Director-General Lee, Li-Chen of the New Taipei City Information Bureau stated that the New Taipei City Documentary Film Award Festival has long been dedicated to nurturing Taiwanese documentary filmmaking by providing creators with substantial financial and production support. This year’s opening film, The True Spirit, follows a youth boxing team in Sanxia, New Taipei City. The film was selected as a winning project for the 2022 New Taipei City Documentary Award and has since been expanded into a feature-length documentary for theatrical release, demonstrating how the New Taipei City Documentary Film Award continues to support selected projects and help them reach a wider stage.
This year’s festival features four thematic sections: "Where Is Home?", "Through the Tides of Time," "The Paths We Choose," and "2026 New Taipei City Documentary Award Selected Premieres," showcasing a total of 18 screenings and 12 post-screening Q&A sessions. The closing film, Palimpsest: The Story of a Name, won the Golden Horse Awards for Best Documentary Feature and Best Film Editing. Additionally, the festival will present a special screening event in collaboration with the popular character IP "Shiba Says," featuring the Japanese documentary Dogs and War in Ukraine. Attendees can interact and take photos with Shiba Says mascots on-site, adding more fun and interactive experiences to the documentary festival.
Beyond the compelling opening and closing films and thematic sections, this year’s international selection features a strong lineup, including The True Spirit, winner of the Golden Bear at the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival; Wishing On A Star, an official competition entry at the Venice Film Festival; and the highly anticipated music documentaries Ryuichi Sakamoto and Blur: To the End. Domestic selections feature director Liang, Chieh-Te’s box-office hit Fly! Mountain Hawk Eagle and Golden Horse Awards-winning director Shen, Ko-Shang’s Seven Ages of a Man. Through diverse perspectives, these films reflect the profound connections between the land, people, and the times, showcasing the cultural influence that deeply connects local roots with the global stage.
The Information Bureau stated that all festival screenings offer free online ticket reservations on a first-come, first-served basis, complemented by an on-site stamp-collection campaign where attendees who collect six points can enter a prize draw. Screening venues include Banqiao Fuzhong 15 – New Taipei City Documentary Cinema, Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute, Vie Show Cinemas Banqiao Mega City, Showtime Cinemas, Shulin District, and Vie Show Cinemas Yulon City. Film lovers are warmly invited to seize this opportunity to visit the theaters and experience the diverse perspectives and echoes of our times presented by these 25 documentaries.
